LOGLINE:
Slated to compete in the prestigious youth opera competition 14 year old Denyce Graves misses her opportunity, suffering trauma after witnessing a murder right before her eyes.
SYNOPSIS:
Surrounded by Duke Ellington High School of the Arts’ best classically trained upperclassman vocalists, first year student DENYCE GRAVES hesitates before taking center stage to compete for a spot in the metropolitan youth opera
competition.
Just before her time runs out, Denyce is saved by the guidance of her voice instructor MS. GROVES, and sounds of Leontyne Price playing in her mind. Denyce gathers her composure, and takes the judges' breath away. Winning a spot in the evening competition, Denyce is rewarded a pass to leave school early.
Unfortunately, an afternoon of rest and relaxation wouldn’t prepare Denyce for what was to come next. Abiding by her mother’s concern of being careful and avoiding danger, to her dismay crime unfolds right before Denyce’s eyes, too fast enough for her to escape. As she enjoys her metro ride to the competition, a man is gunned down on the very same bus. Luckly Denyce arrives home in one piece. However, she misses the competition and almost loses her mind.
It is only until her guardian angel Ms. Groves restores her faith in herself, Denyce musters up the courage to venture back on the local bus, changing the trajectory of her life as she becomes a famous Opera Singer.
